Gastric Sleeve and Staying Focused

I admit it, I've been in denial over my gastric sleeve. I gained some weight back and I kept trying to pretend otherwise. And that I didn't know why. But I do know why.

Eating isn't the problem. I still have a small little gastric sleeve and can't eat much at a time. I'm so used to seeing my food on a small dessert plate I'm shocked when I see a "regular" size plate of food. I usually eat around 4 of my "meals" a day.

Drinking IS the problem. It's the one thing I can do without restrictions with my gastric sleeve. And I have indulged. From lattes, to iced coffee, to alcoholic drinks I have been on a binge.

The point isn't how I'm managed to work around the calorie restriction built into my gastric sleeve, it's the fact that I did. All of us who have a VSG or are considering it have food issues. We need to be aware of what we are doing and not think that our VSG is a cure all. It's all about being conscious of what we are doing and not using food as a crutch.

OK, back to drinking....my Crystal Lite!! LOL

I bookmarked your blog a long time ago but considered it abandoned. :-) However, I just clicked and saw that you were posting again. Thanks for continuing to update us on how you are doing. I'm 7 months post-op and can see how easy it is to forget the rules of the tool the farther out from surgery you get. Thanks for being honest about your regain and I'm hoping you can use your tool to get back to your goal. Rooting for you!

I had my VSG about 3 years ago and loved it! However, I've been steadily gaining weight again in recent times- I started off by drinking mixed sweet alcoholic drinks on thweekends then started eating foods that were easily digestible- I feel horrible- and am trying to get on the right track! I went to my surgeon in hopes that he could "adjust" my vsg- no such animal- he sent me to a diet doctor- who gave me pills! I'm miserable, I've lost 10 pounds- but I hate diet pills- Is there an adjustment that can be performed on vsg r's?

There is no adjustment to the VSG. However, it is the first part of the Duodenal Switch surgery. In a DS they make the stomach small like a VSG and then they do a bypass on part of the intestines. The resulting malabsorption leads to more weight loss. However, I think if you eat and drink wrong any WLS can be sabotaged. Just my take on it anyway.
